Pickleball
Pickleball, a mixture of ping-pong, badminton and tennis, is sweeping the country and has become increasingly popular in Kenmure. The sport is played with composite or wooden paddles about twice the size of ping-pong paddles and perforated plastic ball similar to a wiffle ball. It requires some hand-eye coordination, reasonably quick reflexes and strategic ball placement. But it requires less foot speed, strength and stamina than tennis because the court is smaller, about the size of a badminton court, and the ball travels more slowly. Both the ball and the sport were named 53 years ago by the inventor whose neighbor owned a cocker spaniel named “Pickles” who would grab and hide every stray ball that came his way. Kenmure now has about 18 regular, year-around players and several others who play on occasion. We play round-robin doubles starting at 9:00 am on Saturday mornings and 4:00 pm on Monday and Wednesday afternoons. We usually play for about 90 minutes. If you’re a KCC sports or golf member, we invite you to drop in and join the fun. Our current players will be more than willing to teach you the basics. Most newcomers find that it doesn’t take long to become reasonably adept. Pickle Power 600x450 No special apparel is needed — just sneakers and comfortable clothing appropriate for a court sport. Some players bring their own paddles, but there are plenty of extra balls and paddles to get you started. If you are not sure you want to become a player, we suggest you come to the courts and watch. You can also watch some great Pickleball videos by searching Google or YouTube. (Don’t worry. We’re not that good.) But be careful. You may decide to “give it a try“ and suddenly find yourself addicted to pickles.
